I think you miss the point of Qureshi's post. I think he realizes he was an asshole and went wayyyy too far. If he was just a jerkoff trying to make money I doubt he would even bother with that kind of article. I really think you got it all wrong.SirFWALGManhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01310209706844541719noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1169281096117913024.post-47197861361744599562011-02-13T00:08:05.763-06:002011-02-13T00:08:05.763-06:00I enjoyed the breakdown and your commentary on the...I enjoyed the breakdown and your commentary on the bet. I struggled with my thoughts on it as I read Qureshi's blog on it.

I really wanted to give Qureshi the benefit of the doubt in his post, but just came across too many points as you pointed out where he was delusional to believe a 'friend' would act in the manner he was doing.

There were to many instances where a true friend would have ended it, not got involved, or washed their hands of it if they couldn't have stopped them.

It makes me a bit sad though that maybe these guys really don't know what it's like to have a true friend. Guess it's true what they say about money not being able to buy everything.Michaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17190937282558817928noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1169281096117913024.post-26106249924149008702011-02-12T15:22:03.407-06:002011-02-12T15:22:03.407-06:00Thanks for the post, definitely hits on a lot of t...Thanks for the post, definitely hits on a lot of the negative points that aren't getting enough play in this whole story.

I am somewhat in agreement with Don though that, while it doesn't justify Qureshi's actions, Griffin seems to have a serious gambling problem amongst other things on his hands and a stern talking to from his roommate likely wasn't going to change his mind.

That being said, if it was my kid doing that bet, I would have broken the treadmill, burned down the gym, slashed his tires so he couldn't drive to another gym, or barricaded my kid in his room in order to make sure he didn't take part in such an absurd bet. That's right, I'm gonna be *that* mom.

And a big thank you for calling out the media. I will readily admit I am part of the problem and this bet, combined with the Ted Forrest weight loss bet, has really given me pause about whether or not I am okay with depicting the poker world the way we do. These guys aren't heroes, they shouldn't be celebrated, and we really should be shedding more light on problem gambling than we are.

Just my two cents. A sort-of relevant story: Several yea...Well said.

A sort-of relevant story: Several years ago, my best friend and shooting buddy turned 50 and invited a bunch of people to his rural cabin for a party. After a while, he broke out a couple of shotguns to do some impromptu skeet shooting. Steve was usually the only person I've ever known who was even more scrupulous about heeding the rules of firearms safety than I was. But on this occasion, he had been doing some celebratory drinking, and he got careless. I noticed the little slips in protocol, but figured his deeply ingrained habits were sufficiently strong not to let anything too serious go wrong.

A while later, I looked up to see Steve's 12-gauge pointed directly at my head. This wasn't on purpose; he was fiddling with the clay thrower, and just wasn't paying attention to where his gun ended up pointing. Worse, it was loaded and the safety was off. It was literally a jostle or a slip of the finger from killing me by accident. It was the kind of basic mistake that he would never have made in a million years when sober.

My reaction? I went into the cabin to wait until the rest of them decided to stop shooting. I didn't want to intrude on their fun, but I also didn't feel like having to watching out for loaded shotguns discharging in my direction.

It was cowardly. It had the one moral advantage that if everybody else made the same choice, Steve would have been left shooting by himself and would have quit to join everybody else inside. But it did nothing to put a stop to the obvious, egregious danger that was lurking.

A couple of days later, after mulling it all over, I went to his house to talk to him about it. He was profusely apologetic for his serious lapse in judgment. (I should add that he was usually an absolutist about keeping alcohol and firearms separate. Though he was a firearms instructor and had a concealed-carry permit and usually carried a pistol everywhere he went, if he was going to so much as have a glass of wine with dinner at a restaurant, he'd leave the gun at home.)

But I told him that I owed him an even bigger apology for chickening out. Especially after seeing the shotgun pointed my way, but probably even sooner than that, I should have pulled him aside and said, "Steve, I'm glad you're having a good time, but you've had too much to drink to be handling guns safely. I really think we should put them away and find something else to do." He admitted that he had enough respect for my judgment that if I had done so, he would have complied.

I'm eternally grateful that nobody got hurt that night, because my guilt would have been unbearable if they had, after my only response to the situation had been to pull myself out of danger, leaving everyone else in it.

Queshi should never have participated in the bet in the first place. Moreover, he should have done what he could to persuade his friend that he was being reckless. It might not have succeeded, because you ultimately can't abrogate another person's autonomy. But still, the least duty he owed his friend was to say, "I'm not going to encourage or take part in you doing something that could jeopardize your health as seriously as this bet could."

Ted Forrest has permanent injuries because of a foolish prop bet (about weightlifting, as I recall offhand). Despite knowing that Forrest is capable of going so far as to injure himself to win a prop, Mike Matusow still engaged him in that crazy weight-loss bet. I feel the same way about that situation. It is simply wrong to put others in harm's way or condone or participate in them putting themselves in harms' way--especially one's friends, and especially when you're doing it for profit.Rakewellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15873391354585352712noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1169281096117913024.post-54193662457807774122011-02-11T16:44:47.158-06:002011-02-11T16:44:47.158-06:00Thank you for writing this.
