I withhold tips primarily for two reasons: 1) the one stated by this previous commenter and 2) A dealer being mean to me personally.

Otherwise I will tip even if I've just won the blinds. I dont necessarily think of it as reward for good service, but I will withhold it as punishment for bad behavior. And I will stare them dead in the face as I do it too. -dawn summersAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1169281096117913024.post-64704364742069044402010-08-12T04:06:26.078-05:002010-08-12T04:06:26.078-05:00I have encountered quite a few gorgeous male deale...I have encountered quite a few gorgeous male dealers here in London. Plus, I also think the automatic gratuity would greatly reduce the frequency of bigger tips (20%+). If the bill already has a 12-18% gratuity added, I think most folks would just think, "good enough" and head out. But, if left to their own tipping practice, they might routinely tip a much higher percentage.Grange95https://www.blogger.com/profile/01857460215043659894noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1169281096117913024.post-46834010895719528902010-08-11T13:58:54.846-05:002010-08-11T13:58:54.846-05:00@ JT88: I'm with you in tipping some regular ...@ JT88: I'm with you in tipping some regular dealers more because of what they add to the experience. Frankly, I've long said that the dealers at the Meadows ATM are, as a group, superior to the dealers at the 'Shoe or Riverside. We're kind of lucky to have such a good crew, and I tip them well because of it.

(And I also despise tip shillers; seems more common in Vegas, in my experience.)

@ Michael: At the risk of offending any Meadows ATM dealers reading this post ... let's just say that most male dealers weren't hired to double as eye candy. You do find the occasional somewhat attractive guy dealing in some of the Vegas rooms, but overall, I rarely find a dealer distracting me from the game. My guess is that, in an industry where most customers are straight men, and most managers doing the hiring are also straight men, attractiveness is more likely to be used as a criterion for hiring female dealers than male dealers. Not saying that's fair or right, but it seems to fit what I see.

To put it another way, there's a reason that cocktail servers in Vegas are generally women, and generally young, attractive women, even though in the slots area, women play as much if not more than men. Off the top of my head, the only Vegas casino where I've seen male cocktail servers is the Rio, where some of the cast from their "Carnivale" show double as cocktail servers. Now there's some eye candy I've appreciated, and overtipped!Grange95https://www.blogger.com/profile/01857460215043659894noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1169281096117913024.post-45537928007223628892010-08-11T13:37:29.654-05:002010-08-11T13:37:29.654-05:00In thinking about the restaurants adding an automa...In thinking about the restaurants adding an automatic gratuity, it occurs to me that most servers probably don't like it either. After years in the F&B industry in a former life, and having a lot of friends still in it, I think restaurant tips average around 17% for medium quality (bills of $20-$25/person) or higher restaurants. Now, 18% would seemingly sound good, except that under this scenario, the servers will receive their tips through their payroll system, and be taxed on the whole enchilada (knocking the effective tip rate down to the 13-14% range). Of course, most servers claim SOME tips, but probably only about 1/2 of what they actually get in cash. In addition, places that add gratuities typically POOL their tips, which disincentivizes (word?) their performance. Bad play all-around, in my book, and might drive off customers in the same way that resort fees often infuriate hotel patrons.cbob8https://www.blogger.com/profile/14588427564455000080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1169281096117913024.post-24323113572335200122010-08-11T08:39:02.917-05:002010-08-11T08:39:02.917-05:00Great article Grange and interesting perspective. ...Great article Grange and interesting perspective. But come on now, while maybe not for Boobs based on your 'immunity' are you telling me there's never been a bigger tip for the right male look :) Although this maybe a moot point for poker dealers (actually might be moot point for either sex in that regards)Michaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17190937282558817928noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1169281096117913024.post-73260011054565094362010-08-11T06:27:37.643-05:002010-08-11T06:27:37.643-05:00I think I am right there with you on the reasons w...I think I am right there with you on the reasons why I tip poker dealers. I also regularly tip more to dealers I like. There are several on the Friday/Saturday night shifts at Prairie Meadows that I tip more generously when I win a hand just because they make the game more fun (Lance, Jim, Yung, Audrey, Rex...I'm sure I forgot a couple there).

I've only ever withheld tips from a dealer once. I won't out the dealer except to say that she works the later part of Friday nights and on a good day is less than friendly. We had a new (bad) player at our table who obviously didn't know the common etiquette for poker tipping. When he didn't tip on a pot he won she was clearly fuming over the loss of that one dollar. On the next hand when a regular tipped her she emphatically said, "Thank you for the tip, sir," while staring a hole directly through the newbie that didn't tip.

Shilling for tips like that makes me immediately want to stop tipping. More importantly, if you're driving away a source of my profit through your angry-at-the-world personality, you're probably not getting any more of my tips either. I made sure to point out the episode to the floor on my way out, but I don't know if they did anything about it or not.JT88Keysnoreply@blogger.com
